Katie Curd and I collaborated in response to a brief from the Designers Institute of New Zealand. They needed the layout for the finalist display boards at the 2012 Best Awards. Restricted to 32 boards, with very specific rules around the arrangement of categories, we organised over 330 entries into a cohesive display for the industry to view at the awards ceremony.
We designed a flexible grid system, directed a team of 10 designers with the data input, co-ordinated with the product design department and printers and oversaw the installation. This was the first year the display was done and after the awards ceremony, the exhibition went on tour nationwide.
The system uses a set grid and a selection of image sizes which must be aligned. It allows each designer some freedom to play with layout, and yet the finished results look cohesive due to the restrictions. The system produces playful layouts with lots of white space, which suits the already existing identity of the Best Awards designed by Alt Group.
